Double Fine's "Broken Age"

It feels like forever since I've added anything to my game project, but I'm hoping to rectify that soon.  At the moment, I'm trying to figure out how to insert an HTML5 file into the top of this blog to act as its header.  It's been beyond frustrating.

On a completely unrelated topic, Double Fine just released the first trailer for "Broken Age".  I'm pretty excited to get my hands on this one as I've closely followed its development through its kickstarter campaign.  Even if the game isn't any good, its still worth the money I funded just for the documentaries that detailed its progress.  Such a fascinating look into their creative process and the troubles that come with creating a game.  I highly recommend watching them or the recaps over at Gametrailers.com.

Super T.I.M.E Force

So this is kind of blowing my mind.  It looks like someone took the replay ghosts in Mario Kart and Super Meat Boy and made them functional in game.  The art style is fast and fun with a retro aesthetic and complimented with some announcer sound bites that reminds me of visiting the arcades.  I'm really fascinated by this one and can't wait to get my hands on it.

If you'd like to know more, I came across this article on the game's developement. HOW 'SUPER TIME FORCE' FELL INTO CAPYBARA'S LAP (AND YOURS)

Time For Adventure!

Full disclosure: I've only seen 1 or 2 episdodes so far, but I definitely see its appeal.  I'm trying to catch up on my Rust Belt Monster challenges and put together a quick drawing for Adventure Time.  Drawn completely in Sketchbook Pro with a little touch up in Photoshop.  I played around with the S-Curve tool to try and keep the characters organic.  Normally I draw my characters more blocky and I'm trying to get around that a  little bit.

Duck Tales Remastered by Wayforward

I really can't contain my excitement for this.  The original Duck Tales for the NES was a lot of fun, but a game that I never finished.  I grew up on the show and am such a huge admirer of Wayforward Studios that I can't wait for this release.  Bravo to who ever realized there was a demand for this.

Blog Headers

It recently dawned on me that I'm coming up on the 3 year anniversary of my blog.  I've had long droughts and periods of plentiful posts, but the one thing I've never done is create a blog header.  Weird right.  I'm an artist.  The first thing you would think I'd do it create something flashy for the top of my blog.

Well I didn't and its finally starting to annoy me.  The current plan is to do it in Construct 2.  I'm pretty sure I can embed it into an iframe and it will sit at the top of the page.  Ultimately I'd like something fun and slightly interactive.  Maybe something along the lines of those old Disney interactive story books for the PC that came out during the dawn of the CD Rom.  It could end up being a much bigger pain in the ass than I'd like...or it could be a lot of fun.  We'll have to wait and see.

Sure Looks Heavy

I've been thinking about walk cycles for when the player is carrying heavy objects.  I'm really trying to get a sense of weight in the posture and movement.  I know its still a while down the road, but I wanted to take a shot at it anyways.

Game Minder Expo 2013

Sadly, I had to miss out on Cleveland's first ever Game Minder Expo.  It was a collaboration of game designers from the area showing of their games and sharing ideas with other enthusiasts.  I couldn't make it because my dryer decided to die and drastically needed replacing.  Hopefully this was the first of many and I can make it to the next.  Luckily, the Game Minder guys recorded the panels.  Above is the collection from Youtube.  I'm sure I'll be pouring over these for the rest of the week.

Flying Sketches

Finally starting to work on my flying positions again.  I really need to get all of the "placeholder" art out of there and finish off the base animations.  At that point I can finally start to add in the art for carrying NPC's and objects.  Looking forward to getting more done this weekend.

Screen Replacement in After Effects

(Screen Replacement Can Be Seen In Opening Of Video)

It had been a long time since I'd done any serious After Effects work.  My girlfriend's father was turning 60 and we wanted to do something special for the occasion.  I knew I would be doing the normal slideshows but I didn't have anything all that interesting for the opening until I recognized the opportunity in his having the last name "Storme".  So my girlfriend and I started scouring Youtube for news clips with funny uses of the word "storm".  After we gathered the clips, I started compositing in the pictures and changing the headers.

The beginning composite with the newscaster was my first real use of Mocha AE and I'm happy with the results (though I recognize the effect is far from perfect).  Like most projects I take on, I make the mistake of not shooting video for the effect and rather just trying to shove an effect into preexisting footage.  The screen behind him has moving images and a colors that were too close to his suit color to completely key out or rotoscope.  In the end it took multiple passes separating multiple parts of the newscaster.  I'm happy with how it came out and will be using Mocha AE more in the future.

I Arted!

I arted all over the place.  While working on a pitch for a little work with the RBMC, I had to draw a bunch of characters that would surround a wrestling ring.  Here are some rough sketches of what I came up with.

Superhero Game: Video Update

Still playing around with different screen capture software.  This time I've landed on Camstudio.  Its not amazing but it definitely does the trick.  I'm hoping to do more "Devlog" type stuff in the future, but at the moment I'm not sure what I would have to say.  Hopefully it will get me to work at a more consistent pace.  We'll have to wait and see.

Hero Protection

If I can offer another small glimpse into the design of the game, I've long planned to have some slight control over the NPC's.  Just a little bit of directing you can do to get them to run from danger or stay in a spot while you fight.  I started sketching today and the idea popped back into my head.  Its a little off-model and the right arm is wonky, but there's something about it that I like.

This is a busy week, but I'm hoping to get back to it Monday.  I really need to get that flying figured out.  Ugh.
