Daily Sketch 3-27-12

Occasionally, I'll go through my Amazon wish list and look at some of my oldest entries.  Its usually a good indication of how wildly my interests change.  My first love has always been animation and a lot of the unread books have to do with that.  A few years back I was playing with the idea of doing a web series.  The above character was from that.  I've been working on a different animated project and its rekindled a lot of those feelings that I used to have about animation.  I guess that's why the bear entered my head.  I might have to revisit those ideas.

Sketchbook Pro iPad Coloring Test

I'm always looking for ways to keep drawing while doing other things.  I recently had the idea of getting my Cintiq out to my living room for when I watch TV.  After realizing that it was impossible and stupid...I decided to try digitally coloring on my ipad in Sketchbook Pro.  I basically just imported my pencil drawing into Sketchbook Pro and turned its layer to multiply.  Its not perfect, but might be fun to tinker with some old sketches while I'm in the living room.

Daily Sketch: 3-22-12

Got away from drawing every day and hated myself for it. Just a quick lunch time sketch.  Hoping to be more frequent in the doodling.  Also, I'm obsessed with Instagram.  Follow me at: needyourdisease

Ralph McQuarrie Tribute Sketch

This week at the Rust Belt Monster Collective, we've decided to deviate from the normal schedule and create a tribute to the later Mr. Ralph McQuarrie.  If you are unfamiliar with his work, then know that he is a visionary concept artist that created much of what we love in the original Star Wars franchise.  In looking for a subject for this week's challenge, I found a character off to the right in a painting he did of Jabba the Hut.  I don't think it was ever represented in the film so I thought that might be a cool one to draw.  It also has a bit of a Dark Crystal vibe, which I like.

My Favorite Ipad Apps

I've recently found myself trying to find the best way to multitask as I take care of every day activities and try to remain a social being.  A lot of my friends carry around a tiny sketchbook and steal a moment to draw something or jot down an idea that pops in there head.  With the upcoming announcement of the iPad 3, it got me thinking about how my iPad 1 has been a natural progression of the "carry your sketchpad" mentality.  Here are a few of the apps that I use the most.  All of them are art related, but they're also starting points for work that I would finish on my computer.  The iPad just isn't as accurate as I would like and I sometimes feel like I'm drawing with a crayon.

Probably the app I use the most.  They recently added some features and functionality that has helped to get some better results out of your drawing.  Definitely worth picking up if you're an artist, but I would suggest getting some kind of pen with a rubber tip to use with it.

A new one that I picked up the other day.  Its a fun and highly functional little animation program.  I wouldn't use it for anything finished, but if I just want to rough out an animation while sitting on the couch, its a great starting point.  I plan on figuring out a way to export it as frames to I can do the final clean up, ink, and paint on the computer.

While I still plan on making my game some day, I found that this app helps me sit around and create assets while I've got the TV on.  I basically export it to the Photo section on my iPad and then email the pictures to myself.  I'll have to composite it into a spritesheet when I'm done.

Ben Franklin Sketch 3-1-12

I really need to get this week's piece finished for the Rust Belt Monster Collective.  I knew early on that I wanted to use Ben Franklin and something with electricity.  Hopefully, I can ink and color it tonight.

Update: See the finished picture at here - Benjamin Franklin Takes His Revenge!
